a shrine for the gentleman was built in the studio early this afternoon with all sorts of candid shots. all were taken into consideration as i sketched.
working this way reminds me of an old johnny cash song about a caddy he pieced together with parts stolen over many years as an assembly line worker.
the resulting reference drawing utilizes a youthful haircut and jawline, glasses from the late 70s, mid-career nose, so on and so forth.
it's hard to believe a gem this size is able to be hidden in asheboro. j & s wholesale is a huge warehouse of odd lots. so huge they use golf carts to travel from point A to point B. ten feet tall pallets of mufflers? they got 12. 15 stacks of jarritos soda? yup. feral cats? i got proof. a purple and yellow church pew? uh-huh. and chairs. that's why we went there -- for a chair.
asheboro arts center's new director, derrick sides was in need of a desk chair. after passing a mirrored roulette wheel, several horse buggys, and a hot rod shaped like a can of beer, we found several that fit the bill. he bought an orange one.
did i mention the life-size marilyn monroe sculpture with real teeth?
