natural light from the studio continues to shine favorably. today i worked with et hacskaylo. she has a way with the painting and watercolor as you can see in the framed work behind her. though in a calm pose, she is in the throws of final preparations for her solo exhibit in october at the art center.

these eyes perceive. ross holt produces photos of objects at such an angle, the results are often abstracted by the scale. he posed with one of the photos. i first met ross and his work years ago at one of his installations in greensboro. he is also the assistant director of the randolph county library. he hunts chupacabre.

tested the limits of the intimate new studio today -- five souls gathered for the portrait of marion mcintosh. her soul is precious. her eyes are sharp. her attitude is demure. marion is well loved by her friends. she posed with one of her favorite stories -- dostoevsky's crime and punishment. marion was an educator for many, many years. the other ladies in the studio are part of her painting group at the art center. it was a group effort in adding the sparkle to this portrait.
thank you to debra spinks for the photos.

old bricks and new light posts.
this image is a partial depiction of the buildings across the street from the asheboro arts center second storey studios.
some of the bricks are reused. some are cracked. some have what looks like stones and quartz crystals protruding from them. some are real dark and have a sheen to them. other are straight up orange. and many are terra cotta. many different bricks make this town.

ray spinks has the best hat. it has the honolulu police emblem on it. kinda that sueded fabric on the front. trucker mesh on the back panels.
some things don't translate in painting. the 'suede' to his hat doesn't. nor does his laugh. his laugh is sorta a chuckle, sorta a giggle -- all happiness.
ray has 19 grandchildren and i believe 3 great-grandchildren.
his first car, a 1934 chevrolet, was so clean his older brother (who had his own ride) would ask to borrow it so as to impress the ladies.
thanks to debra spinks for her assistance.

this portrait has an antique and porcelain feel to it. joyce spoon brought pearls and lace to her sitting. and a big ole' wicker hat with flowers on it. she has a booth with vintage clothing and more lace at a local antique mall.
the real pearls though, are her textile creations. she is currently showing several of her handemade pieces as part of an invitational exhibition in the art center gallery.
she also mentioned her intent to make stuffed squash for dinner tonite. it sounded yummy. and i strongly dislike squash.

any way you choose, you get two fascinating asheboro folks. they sat a la 'american gothic' today . . . with hats. and a donkey painting. and a long board.

newspaper owner. mother of two. technology teacher. 911 dispatcher. ditch digger. robin breedlove is a blur. her brow was moist as she sat today -- not from the studio lights mind you, nor was she overwhelmed with tasks. she just keeps moving.
robin passed me a quote from mark twain: "to succeed in life you need two things: ignorance and confidence."
appropriately enough, butterfly food, strong shoulders, and a big smile doesn't hurt either.
08-08-09 edit: ditch filler -- not digger.
